Nov 26, 2017 - Swale, NYC’s floating garden, grows fresh produce that visitors can pick for free.

Construction has continued slowly but surely on “Little Island,” formerly known as Pier 55, and it’s really starting to take shape in the Hudson River. This summer starting in June, you’ll be seeing an 80-foot by 30-foot floating community garden project called Swale pop up on the Hudson, courtesy of activist artist Mary Mattingly (you may have read about this last year). Floating Garden transforms the rooftop environment by harmonizing its imagery with the garden, sky, and cityscape. Enveloping three sides of the central garden structure, the artwork generates a sense of place for the convergence of Nature and Culture. Friends of the High Line raises nearly 100% of the High Line’s annual budget. Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is a public park programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.

Floating gardens provide habitats for varied marine/terrestrial species, opportunities for urban agriculture and climate change mitigation. They can also act as connective features linking habitats across urban boundaries (dependent on size/location and species mix). Floating gardens are having a renaissance. Faced with the realities of climate change, this centuries-old technique is being adapted in different parts of the world to solve twenty-first century challenges. The first floating gardens were built hundreds of years ago in Mexico and can still be enjoyed today (in part Gabriella Asztalos’ Floating Garden brings modern planter design back inside the home, reflecting on edgy materials, simple shapes and minimalist design.
