The topic of her expansive master's thesis was the fascinating life story of the trail-blazing German jazz pianist Jutta Hipp. Hipp, after a brief, highly publicized career in Germany and the United States during the 1950s, had abruptly abandoned her path and vanished into obscurity.

Jazz pianist, born 4 February 1925 in Leipzig, Germany, died 7 April 2003 in Queens, New York, USA. Jutta Hipp had a strangely brief career, dropping out of music altogether shortly after emigrating to the United States. She studied painting in Germany and played jazz during World War II. She had been active as a professional pianist in her native Germany from 1946 on, was a member of the Hans Koller Quartet in the early 1950s and from 1954-55 led her own combo, The Jutta Hipp Quintet. Members of her Frankfurt/Main based band included Emil Mangelsdorff, Joki Freund, and, on occasion, guitarist Atilla Zoller.

Feather discovered her "in the crowded cellar club in Duisberg," and invited her to go to US. Jutta Hipp was born in Leipzig on February 6 1925 and showed early talent in both music and art. It was while she was studying at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig that she discovered jazz.

Born in Leipzig during the Weimar Republic, Hipp initially listened to jazz in secret, as it was not approved of by the Nazi authorities. After surviving World War II, she became a refugee, often lacking food and other necessities.
